Alternatives for Lip Enhancement
Have you ever caught yourself staring at Angelina Jolie and wondering what she did to deserve those perfect lips? I know I have. Full, sensual lips have been considered an aesthetic ideal for ages. However, not many women were born with such perfect lips; but now we can all have them!
Thanks to Lip Augmentation. Lip augmentation is a cosmetic procedure which can give you plumper, fuller lips. In the past decade, lip augmentation has become a popular trend mainly as a result of many A-list celebrities doing it. There are two main types of lip augmentation:
1. Surgical/Permanent Lip Augmentation
In this method, a plastic surgeon puts implants in your lips to give you the look you desire. The implants may be artificial or natural. Artificial implants include saline, silicone, and Goretex. The materials used should be soft enough to create a realistic texture and at the same time semi-solid to ensure your lips retain their shape.
Here are some benefits and considerations of lip implants:
Benefits of Lip Implants
- Results can last for many years
- When performed by a skilled cosmetic surgeon, lip implant surgery can take less than 30 minutes to perform and leave virtually undetectable scars
- Most patients require only 1 to 3 days of downtime
- A safe procedure and beautiful results require a highly experienced, qualified cosmetic surgeon
- Another surgery is required to remove lip implantsImplants are not effective for smoothing fine lip lines

Your own fat can be used as a natural implant. A lot of surgeons recommend using your own fat as an implant because it feels more comfortable and being your own natural fat, the chances of suffering from any complications are slim.
Depending on the type of implant used, you may have to go back a few times after the initial surgery. On average, lip augmentation surgery costs between $2000 – $4000.
Using fat transfer for lip enhancement isn’t a permanent solution because eventually, the body reabsorbs the fat. However, some of the fat can last indefinitely. The enlargement usually lasts anywhere between 3 to 12 months.

Collagen fillers used to be the most popular, but the hyaluronic acid fillers are safer and tend to last longer. Here is more on the benefits of hyaluronic acid fillers:
Control over lip volume. The amount of substance injected can be controlled, so the doctor has better control over how much lip volume is created.
Gradual pace of treatment. The injections can be given gradually during different appointments until the desired results are achieved.
Bumps dissolve easily. Any lumps and bumps created by movement of the lips can be dissolved easily.
Less bruising. There may be less bruising and swelling compared to other dermal fillers.
Reasonably lasting results. The results are reasonably long-lasting, but not permanent.
Allergic reaction unlikely. Because hyaluronic acid fillers are made from substances similar to those found in the body, they are unlikely to cause an allergic reaction. But if you are allergic to lidocaine, tell your doctor before being treated.

There are also some balms and special lip gloss that you can use to plump your lips. These are a great option if you don’t want pain or permanent effects. You can also try LED light therapy to plump your lips. However, as there are many products out there, it is important to consult your doctor on which is the best and safest product to use.
Regardless of how you choose to plump your lips, it is vital to remember that the results may be short term. Consider all facts prior to proceeding with any procedure and consult your San Jose cosmetic doctor to seek their input.
